What the Hell Is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

It's easily mistaken as mere cliche, a catch-all term for pent-up anger or fear. I've heard two distinct camps tend to get Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: war veterans and crime victims, especially rape survivors.

PTSD is a severe reaction to a traumatic event that involves re-experiencing the event through dreams, recollections or flashbacks. Social support plays a role in protecting people from developing the disorder.
